Russian investigators confirm Prigozhin's death

The death of Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the Wagner mercenary group, has been confirmed by genetic analysis, Russia's Investigative Committee said on August 27.

Prigozhin died when a private plane crashed north of Moscow on August 23.

"According to these results, the identity of the ten victims has been determined and they correspond to the list of passengers presented for the flight," the committee said.

Among the other nine people listed on board the Embraer private jet was Dmitry Utkin, a shadowy figure who managed Wagner's operations and is suspected of serving in Russian military intelligence.

Speculation that the Kremlin may have been involved in Wednesday's overthrow has been rife, with the incident coming exactly two months after Wagner staged an uprising against Moscow's military leadership.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the incident as "tragic" to reporters on Friday, calling rumors of possible foul play an "absolute lie."

Russian officials opened an investigation into air traffic violations after the crash, but have not otherwise released details about the possible cause./ CNA
