Three US Marines die after plane crashes in Australia

Three US Marines have died after their plane crashed in northern Australia, US officials said.

"There were 23 personnel on board. Three of them have been confirmed dead, while five others have been transported to the Royal Darwin Hospital in a serious condition," a US Navy official said in a statement .

Australia's prime minister, Anthony Albanese, said the incident was "tragic". The American plane, according to him, crashed in the north of Australia while participating in military training.

He said that his Government is focused on providing support.

Broadcaster Sky News Australia reported that the V-22 Osprey military transport, carrying about 20 US Marines, crashed off the coast of Darwin.

During a media conference, Albanese declined to give details about how the incident happened or about rescue efforts, which he said were underway on Melville Island north of Darwin.

"Our focus as the Government and as the Department of Defense is to respond to the incident and ensure that any necessary support is provided at this difficult time," he said.

Albanese added that Australian personnel were not involved in the incident.

Northern Territory Police announced earlier that they had responded to reports of a plane crash on Meville Island.

The US and Australia have increased military cooperation in recent years.

Four Australian soldiers were killed last month during bilateral exercises after the helicopter they were traveling in crashed into the ocean off the coast of Queensland./ REL
