The rescue ship Ocean Viking has rescued 438 migrants in the Mediterranean over two days, said the organization SOS Mediterranee, which runs the ship.

Rescue operations are underway in international waters off the coasts of Libya and Tunisia, the France-based non-governmental organization said.

According to the organization, 272 people from 23 different nationalities were rescued on Thursday. They were traveling on three different ships in the central Mediterranean, which is the world's most used route by migrants.

Of those rescued, "32 were unaccompanied minors, nine babies and five people with disabilities," the organization said.

Meanwhile, a day later, another 166 people who were traveling on other ships were rescued.

The rescued migrants were evacuated "in coordination with the Italian coast guard who were in the search and rescue area between Tunisia and Lampedusa".

The Italian island of Lampedusa, located 145 kilometers from Tunisia, is the first port of call for many migrants who undertake the perilous journey to Europe from North Africa.

The organization added that the Ocean Viking ship was headed for Genoa, in northern Italy, after Italian authorities ordered the ship to go to this city to disembark migrants.

At least 2,013 people have died or gone missing this year trying to cross the Mediterranean, the United Nations migration agency said.

This number is higher than the figures for the whole of 2022, when 1,417 people died or went missing.

In June, a ship capsized in the Mediterranean, killing at least 82 people. This was one of the deadliest incidents involving migrants. /REL
