VIDEO-Extreme weather in Mecca/Storm and rain in Saudi Arabia

Storms and heavy rains have invaded Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

The storm brought strong winds exceeding 80 kilometers (50 miles) per hour, Hussein al-Qahtani, spokesman for the National Center for Meteorology, told AFP.

Conditions were similar to a 2015 storm that swept through the Grand Mosque, killing more than 100 people and injuring hundreds more, Qahtani said.

No casualties were reported from Tuesday's storm.

Makkah Al-Kakkiyah recorded 45 millimeters of rain within 24 hours, according to information from the meteorological center.

Everything happened within a few minutes, when the rain storm started.

The Makkah regional government announced that schools would be closed in a part of Makkah and lessons would be conducted on an electronic platform.

The meteorological center warned of more storms on Wednesday that will bring rain, thunderstorms and thunder to the Makkah region and western Saudi Arabia./ CNA
