"Open the Strait"/ UN Chief: Hormuz Crisis is Stifling the Global

UN Secretary-General António Guterres criticized restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz, which he said are hindering the supply of oil, gas, fertilizers and other critical goods and stifling the global economy.

Outlining three possible trajectories, Guterres said that even if restrictions on shipping and trade are lifted immediately, supply chains will take months to recover, with global growth falling from 3.4 to 3.1 percent, inflation rising to 4.4 percent and trade slowing significantly.

"And a world still reeling from the shock of a pandemic and the war in Ukraine will face further economic hardship. That's the best-case scenario," he said.

Guterres highlighted the diplomatic efforts being made by the head of the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS), which is leading the UN Task Force on the Strait, to secure a possible humanitarian corridor.

The head of the UN maritime organization, the IMO, is also developing a framework for evacuating ships and seafarers if safe passage can be guaranteed.

If disruptions stemming from Iranian attacks and threats and the US blockade of Iranian ports continue until mid-year, the consequences will deepen significantly, Guterres continued.

“Thirty-two million people have been pushed into poverty; chemical fertilizers are depleted and crop yields are falling; another 45 million people face extreme hunger; and hard-won development gains have been reversed overnight. In the worst-case scenario, where severe disruptions continue until the end of the year, we face the specter of a global recession – with dramatic impacts on people, on the economy, and on political and social stability,” he warned.

The UN Secretary-General called for the opening of the Strait of Hormuz to allow the global economy to breathe again.

"My message to all parties is clear: Rights and freedoms of navigation must be restored immediately... Open the Strait. Let all ships pass. Let the global economy breathe again," Guterres urged.
