US-Mexico tensions rise/ DOJ accuses Mexican governor of ties to Sinaloa cartel

The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that it has filed charges against the governor of Mexico's Sinaloa state and nine other officials for their alleged involvement in the Sinaloa cartel.

The Justice Department alleged that Ruben Rocha Moya and others conspired with leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel to import large quantities of narcotics into the U.S. in exchange for political support and bribes. The other nine include current and former Mexican officials, some of whom have been accused of participating in the cartel's campaign of violence.

The indictment marks a rare action against sitting Mexican politicians and an expansion of Washington's efforts against cartels, which is likely to heighten tensions between the neighboring countries.

These developments against Moya are particularly problematic for Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, as they are from the same ruling Morena party. Moya is also an ally of Sheinbaum's predecessor and mentor, former President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

The allegations come after the US ambassador to Mexico last week promised action to fight corruption in Mexico.

Responding to the US accusations, Mexican federal prosecutors said they would open their own investigation into the governor of Sinaloa state to determine whether the accusations made by US authorities have a legal basis.

In a statement, Mexico's foreign ministry said it had received extradition requests from the US for "various individuals", without mentioning Moya by name. The ministry said such cases were normally treated confidentially under bilateral relations and that they would initially protest to the US for the way it was publicly announced.

Moya has categorically denied the allegations, which he says have no truth or basis. Moya claimed that the indictment was part of a strategy to violate national sovereignty. /CNA
