Haxhiu meets with parties on Thursday to set election date

Acting President Albulena Haxhiu will hold a consultative meeting with political parties on Thursday, April 30, on the date of new elections.

The meeting will be held at 3:00 PM and all political parties have been invited.

The Vice President of the Democratic Party of Kosovo, Vlora Çitaku, confirmed to Radio Free Europe that the party leader, Bedri Hamza, will participate in this meeting.

Jehona Lushaku-Sadriu will participate from the Democratic League of Kosovo, LDK spokesperson Besian Mustafa told REL.

Meanwhile, Kushtrim Xhemajli, spokesman for the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo, confirmed to Radio Free Europe that Ardian Gjini will participate in the meeting.

This meeting comes after on April 28, the Kosovo Assembly failed to elect the country's new president within the constitutional deadline set in the Constitutional Court's March 25 ruling.

The ruling Vetëvendosje Movement on the evening of April 27 withdrew its two preliminary candidacies for president, Glauk Konjufca and Fatmire Mulhaxha Kollçaku, and proposed two human rights activists, Feride Rushiti and Hatixhe Hoxha, for the position of president.

But, in the session that began on the evening of April 27 and continued until midnight on April 28, the opposition parties did not participate, making it impossible to have a quorum for the election of the new president.

According to the Constitutional Court's ruling, the Assembly was dissolved and now Kosovo must hold elections within 45 days.

Haxhiu has ten days to set the date for the elections. The two dates for holding the elections are May 31 and June 7.

Meanwhile, after a meeting with the acting president of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, the head of the Central Election Commission, Kreshnik Radoniqi, said on Wednesday that this institution prefers June 7 as the election date, as the CEC needs as much time as possible to organize the voting./REL
