Why the UAE's exit from OPEC is an important issue

The United Arab Emirates has announced its departure from OPEC, a development considered to have a major impact on global energy markets and geopolitical balances.

The UAE, one of the main oil producers in the Persian Gulf, had a key role within OPEC, especially due to its large spare capacity, which allowed it to increase production and influence price stabilization. However, the quota restrictions imposed by the organization were beginning to be seen as an obstacle to the full exploitation of its production potential.

The decision to leave is seen as an attempt to increase production and income, at a time when tensions in the region, including relations with Iran and relations with Saudi Arabia, remain complicated.

The move poses a serious challenge to OPEC, which for decades has influenced global oil prices by coordinating production among its members. Analysts warn that the EBA's exit could weaken the organization's cohesion and increase the potential for fiercer competition, even a price war, in the oil market.

At the same time, the developments are also related to long-term changes in the global economy, where dependence on oil is gradually decreasing. Investments in alternative energy and electrification, especially in countries like China, are affecting the reduction of oil demand.

Experts point out that, if tensions in the region ease and export infrastructure expands, including alternative routes that avoid the Strait of Hormuz, UAE production could increase significantly, putting new pressure on global prices.

Although the immediate impact on the market may be limited due to the current crises, this move is expected to have significant consequences in the medium and long term for the energy industry and global economic balances./ CNA
