King Charles, the second British monarch to address the US Congress

When he appears before members of Congress, King Charles will perform a ritual seen only once before.

In May 1991, Charles' mother, Queen Elizabeth II, became the first British monarch to address the US Congress.

On that occasion, much of the monarch's 13-minute speech focused on the Gulf War and the British-US coalition that had recently responded to Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait.

"Together, we are doing our best to restore peace and civil order in the region, as well as to help those members of ethnic and religious minorities who continue to suffer through no fault of their own," she told Congress.

The Queen also stressed the importance of NATO and warned against "being seduced by a form of continental isolation", as history has shown, "progress is achieved when Europeans and Americans act together".

Praising the so-called "special relationship" between the UK and the US, Queen Elizabeth II said that both the UK Parliament and the US Congress were founded in parallel on the "spirit of democracy".

"You will find us worthy partners and we are proud to have you as our friends," she concluded.
