After failure, Orban offers to resign from Fidesz leadership/ Here's when

Following his election defeat, Viktor Orban offered to resign as leader of his right-wing party, Fidesz, during an internal party meeting on Tuesday.

However, the final decision on accepting or rejecting his resignation will be made at a party congress meeting expected to be held on June 13, where Fidesz will also elect its new leadership.

The center-right Tisza Party, led by Peter Magyar, won the April 12 elections, ending a 16-year period of Orban's rule and sparking internal debates about the future of Fidesz.

Lawmaker Erik Banki told state news agency MTI that the June congress will be decisive for the party's new leadership.

After the election, Orban declared that he takes “full responsibility” for the result and that the Hungarian right needs “complete renewal.” In a later statement, he said that he would not take back his parliamentary mandate, but would “return” it to the party.

In a video posted on Facebook, Orban stressed that his current role is not in parliament, but in reorganizing the Hungarian right. He also added that he is ready to continue as party leader if the congress supports this.

Orban has been a prominent figure in Hungarian politics and a known ally of former US President Donald Trump, as well as having support from far-right leaders in Europe./ CNA
