European Parliament approves new rule/ MEPs with newborns can delegate their

The European Parliament today approved a rule allowing proxy voting for new mothers before and after giving birth, despite claims that this conflicts with the institution's gender equality policy.

The changes, approved by MEPs in Strasbourg, introduce a temporary waiver of the rule requiring personal voting for Parliament's plenary sessions. The rules will allow female MEPs to delegate their vote to a trusted fellow legislator up to three months before their due date and for six months after the birth.

Parliament now gives new mothers the right to take six months of maternity leave, from two months before giving birth to four months after. Until now, their vote could not be exercised during this period.

The change is intended to help lawmakers who might otherwise face a difficult choice between casting a vote and caring for a child./ CNA
