Trump considers reducing US troops in Germany amid tensions with Berlin

United States President Donald Trump has said his administration is studying the possibility of reducing the US military presence in Germany, a move that could affect transatlantic relations and the role of NATO.

In a post on social media, Trump said that the decision on the possible reduction of troops, currently over 36,000 soldiers stationed at bases across Germany, is expected to be made within a short period of time.

The statement comes just days after German Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticized the US approach to tensions with Iran. During a speech to students in Marsberg, Merz said the US lacks a clear strategy and suggested that American negotiators have been put in a difficult position by the Iranian side.

Trump reacted sharply to these comments, accusing Merz of not understanding the situation and adding that it is no wonder that Germany is doing poorly, both economically and otherwise.

However, Merz tried to ease tensions, stating at a press conference that his personal relationship with the US president remains good.

These developments come at a time when Trump has repeatedly criticized NATO, calling it a paper tiger and threatening to withdraw the US from the alliance.

Meanwhile, NATO officials have stressed that the organization's founding treaty does not provide for mechanisms for the suspension or expulsion of members, following reports of possible punitive measures against some allies./ CNA
