Historic Artemis II mission/ Trump welcomes NASA astronauts to the White House

United States President Donald Trump welcomed to the Oval Office at the White House the four members of NASA's Artemis II mission crew, who made history three weeks ago after traveling around the moon.

Trump congratulated Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover and Mission Specialists Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen, as well as NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman, on achieving their historic mission.

The four astronauts returned to Earth after spending 10 days in lunar orbit. The mission is widely considered a defining moment in modern space exploration, marking the first crewed trip to the vicinity of the Moon since the Apollo program.

Unlike Artemis I, which tested unmanned systems, Artemis II carried astronauts on a flyby of the moon. The spacecraft traveled approximately 250,000 miles (406,778 km) from Earth, farther than any human mission in history.

Led by NASA, the mission is seen as a major step towards establishing a sustainable human presence beyond low Earth orbit.

During their journey around the Moon, astronauts captured impressive images of the lunar surface and Earth rising above the horizon, echoing iconic images from previous missions while demonstrating advanced technological capabilities.

The crew also performed key experiments and system checks designed to support future lunar landings under the Artemis program.

One of the most critical phases occurred during reentry, when the spacecraft, traveling at speeds exceeding 40,000 km/h, endured extreme heat before safely landing in the ocean. The successful landing highlighted the effectiveness of the Orion spacecraft's heat shield and recovery systems.

NASA officials described Artemis II as a significant milestone, paving the way for future missions aimed at landing humans on the Moon and ultimately expanding exploration deeper into space. /CNA
