President Biden's son pleads not guilty to illegal gun possession

Hunter Biden, the son of US President Joe Biden, pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to illegal possession of a gun.

Prosecutors allege Hunter Biden, 53, lied about his drug use on federal forms when he bought a Colt Cobra revolver in 2018.

He admitted that at that time he was a big user of cocaine, but he did not admit that he broke the law.

He appeared in federal court in Delaware in a hearing that lasted 25 minutes.

Biden could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted of the three federal charges.

He was indicted in late September after efforts to reach a plea deal failed in July.

Biden faces three charges, which relate to suspicions that he lied on forms when he bought the gun while he was a drug user.

Under federal law in the US, it is a crime to lie on such documents, or to carry a firearm while on drugs.

That means Hunter faces criminal charges at a time when his father is campaigning for re-election to the White House in the 2024 presidential election.

Biden's potential Republican rival, Donald Trump, faces four upcoming criminal trials, two of which will see him tried for his attempts to undo his defeat of Biden in the 2020 election.

Trump has repeatedly denied the allegations.
