Disaster in northern Lebanon/ Palace collapses, many people under rubble

A building collapsed on Sunday in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli, trapping an unknown number of people under the rubble, according to security sources and Lebanese media.

So far, at least 3 people have been pulled alive from the rubble by rescue teams and residents of the Bab al-Tabbaneh area.

Crews continue to search, while it is not clear how many people are still trapped or if there are other victims.

According to foreign media, there was also a fire at the scene after the building collapsed, which has complicated rescue efforts.

The cause of the collapse is under investigation, but officials and experts have noted that buildings in Tripoli are often structurally weak due to a lack of maintenance and inadequate investment in infrastructure.

Tripoli is one of Lebanon's poorest areas, where infrastructure problems and dangerous buildings are common, especially during winter and bad weather. /CNA
