Clashes and arrests in Milan ahead of Winter Olympics

Six people were arrested on Saturday after clashes between police and protesters in the streets of Milan, one of the host cities for the 2026 Winter Olympics. Some protesters threw fireworks and stones at law enforcement, who responded with water cannons.

The protest was held over a variety of issues, including the cost of living and the environmental impact of the Games. Most participants marched peacefully, but some groups engaged in violence, drawing parallels to the violent demonstration in Turin last week, where over 100 police officers were injured and more than 30 people were arrested.

The government has approved a new security package that allows police to detain suspects up to 12 hours before protests to prevent unrest, a measure that critics call repressive.

On the same day, northern Italy's rail network was hit by suspected attacks, causing delays on lines between Bologna, Venice and Pesaro. Police found cut cables and rudimentary explosive devices near the scene of the incidents. Rail services have since returned to normal.

Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini described the attackers as "criminals" and said these incidents would not damage Italy's image in the world, stressing that the Olympics would be a "great assessment of the country".

The 2026 Winter Olympics will be held until February 22 in Milan, Cortina d'Ampezzo, Predazzo, Tesero, Livigno and Bormio./ CNA
