Large quantity of drugs seized in North Macedonia

The amount of drugs seized is extraordinary for the small Balkan country. Significant links with Serbia are evident. The alleged ringleader of the gang is a local politician from the president's party.

Police in North Macedonia seized over 40 tons of marijuana. Several agricultural enterprises were searched, police announced. Nine tons of the drug and over 1,300 bottles of cannabis oil were seized at a company in Skopje, according to a statement from the North Macedonian Interior Ministry.

Controls were also carried out at a company in the east of the country, where 31 tons of marijuana and biomass were seized. Media in Skopje mention the small town of Strumica, 120 km. southeast of Skopje, as the place of discovery.

The controlled enterprises were licensed to produce medical marijuana, which is permitted for therapeutic purposes in North Macedonia. However, the quantity found does not match the documented legal production. This quantity may have been intended for drug smuggling.

Connections with local politicians

Authorities in Skopje are also investigating possible links in Serbia. In the northern neighbor, prosecutors on January 29 seized five tons of illegal marijuana, which appeared to have come from North Macedonia. The location of the find was a house near the southern Serbian town of Krushevo.

Serbian authorities arrested four people. An international arrest warrant has been issued for the alleged ringleader of the attack, Aleksandar M. M. is a member of the municipal council in Kruševo and belongs to the ruling SNS party of Serbian President Aleksandar Vu?i?.

The North Macedonian Interior Ministry in its statement mentioned concrete links to the drug discovery in Serbia. One of the people arrested in Serbia is the co-founder of the company in which marijuana and cannabis oil were found in Skopje./ DW
