Iranian court sentences Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi to prison

An Iranian court has sentenced 2023 Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi to 6 years in prison on charges of "gathering and collaborating to commit crimes."

Mohammadi was sentenced to 6 years in prison for gathering and collaborating with the intent to commit crimes. He also received an additional 1.5 years in prison for “propaganda” as part of a separate sentence.

The court imposed a two-year travel ban on her. She was sent into exile for two years in the city of Khosf in the eastern province of South Khorasan.

Under Iranian law, sentences often run concurrently, meaning Mohammadi could serve part or all of his sentences in parallel.

She was arrested in December 2025 during a memorial ceremony in the city of Mashhad.

Before being arrested again, Mohammadi had been under house arrest or medical leave since December 2024, having been released for treatment for her health.

During her imprisonment, she went on a hunger strike to protest the conditions of her detention and her arrest.

Narges Mohammadi is a renowned human rights activist, especially for women's rights in Iran, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her ongoing work against repressive rules, including the death penalty and mandatory dress code./CNA
