A genuine scheme of disinformation and an attempt to manipulate public opinion through the names of senior European Union officials was revealed this Thursday by CNA.

It all started with an article published on the "EU Reporter" portal, which attempted to establish an international alibi for the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, by presenting his arrest for corruption and money laundering as a "political persecution".

This article claimed that Veliaj's detention was a serious violation of the rule of law and that international institutions had "serious concerns" about the methods used by SPAK. 

In this constructed narrative, the propaganda also attempted to misuse the name of the rapporteur for Albania in the European Parliament, Andreas Schieder, by interpreting his calls for justice and those of several other MEPs as criticism of the prosecution. But the facts show a different truth.  

After CNA's direct interest in "EU Reporter", the portal itself maintained a distancing stance, indicating that the article was a contribution from an external journalist and did not represent their editorial line, removing responsibility for the claims that attempted to defend Veliaj.

The final blow to this scheme came through an exclusive official communication that Andreas Schieder's office sent to CNA.

In his response, Schieder gives unreserved support to the special structure, stating that:

"SPAK is playing a crucial role in the fight against corruption in Albania and shows that the Albanian government is taking this task very seriously. Their work is essential for a consistent approach in fulfilling the reforms required for pre-membership. However, we must ensure that the necessary investigations are followed by swift processes," Schieder tells CNA.

It seems clear that his request for "fast trials" has been deliberately misinterpreted by Veliaj's PR machine. Schieder demands that the necessary investigations not be delayed, but followed by quick and efficient trials, while SPAK has closed the investigations on time for Veliaj and the procedural maneuvers have been precisely the mayor's, who has blocked court hearings for 7 months, out of fear of facing justice.

It is now up to the GJKKO to make a decision on the mayor, after SPAK completed its task with the serious investigations conducted and the voluminous file of 60 thousand pages.

Schieder's position is fully consistent with the European Parliament's latest draft report for 2025, which emphasizes that corruption remains a serious concern and strongly calls for stronger penalties, especially for high-level management.

The facts revealed by CNA regarding the disinformation carried out by Veliaj prove that Albania's path to the EU passes through SPAK's justice and not through articles commissioned by Veliaj that attempt to use international media and official Brussels as a shield for corruption./ CNA
