Labor market/Wage gap widens

The labor market is facing increasing polarization where wage growth appears as a process divided into two opposing worlds.

According to INSTAT data for the first quarter of 2026, the average gross monthly salary increased to 90,119 lekë, marking an increase of 9.6% compared to the same period in 2025.

However, this average serves as a mask for the inequalities that exist between different economic activities.

At the top of the pyramid are the financial and insurance sectors, with an average salary of 157,434 lek, followed by the information and communication sector with 131,747 lek.

While these sectors continue to enjoy salaries that significantly exceed the national average, the rest of the market, particularly the arts and entertainment sector, has seen the lowest salary growth of just 5.5%.

One factor in this dynamic has been the decision of the Council of Ministers to increase the minimum wage to 50,000 lek from January 1, 2026.

This administrative measure has led to a high concentration of employees in the minimum wage ranges, confirming that for many businesses, increased income for employees does not stem from productivity, but from legal obligations.

This means that while employees in elite sectors are seeing an organic increase in well-being, the vast majority of service workers are only getting their pay increases because the state has set a new minimum threshold.

This structure suggests that the gap between those who earn a lot and those who earn near the subsistence level is becoming increasingly difficult to close./ CNA
