Switzerland votes to cap population at 10 million

Switzerland will head to the polls this Sunday to decide on a proposal aimed at limiting the country's population to 10 million by 2050.

The initiative has been presented by the Swiss People's Party (SVP), which argues that rapid population growth is putting pressure on housing, public services and the environment.

Switzerland currently has around 9.1 million inhabitants, 27% of whom are foreign nationals. Under the proposal, the government would have to take restrictive measures once the population reaches 9.5 million.

Opponents of the initiative, including the Swiss government, major political parties, businesses and unions, warn that the restriction could cause labor shortages, especially in the health, tourism and social care sectors.

They also point out that the move could jeopardize Switzerland's relations with the European Union, especially agreements on the free movement of people.

Recent polls show a close race, with 52% of voters against the proposal and 45% in favor, while a significant portion still remains undecided.

Supporters of the initiative argue that high immigration is causing housing shortages, infrastructure overload and rising social costs.

Meanwhile, opponents say that economic and social problems are not solved by restricting immigration, but through investments in housing, public services and the labor market.

The referendum result is expected to have a significant impact not only on immigration policies, but also on Switzerland's future relations with the European Union./ CNA
