It's a story straight out of a Hollywood script. The plot: two ambitious technologists engaged in a fierce, long-running battle for supremacy in the field of artificial intelligence. Also worth noting: some surprising twists. For example, the fact that Dario Amodei, the head of Anthropic, recently called on the world of artificial intelligence to stop development, as humans could lose control over it.
Or that, just a few days earlier, it had filed documents with the SEC, the financial markets regulator, in preparation for an initial public offering. Claude's developers thus beat the creators of ChatGPT, who announced their arrival on Wall Street and filed the relevant documents a week later.
The timing seems well-chosen. Stock markets are on a positive wave and artificial intelligence is the main topic of the day. Moreover, Anthropic is currently valued at $965 billion. OpenAI, for its part, is valued at $852 billion. An IPO could take both companies into the league of firms valued at over a trillion dollars. Only a few companies like Nvidia, Apple, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta and Tesla have a value of more than $1 trillion. For comparison: Siemens, currently the largest company in Germany, is valued at $230 billion on the stock exchange.
What will all this money be used for?
Research firm Gartner estimates that global spending on artificial intelligence will continue to grow strongly. The largest spending category is the provision of AI infrastructure. This includes, in particular, the construction and leasing of large data centers, where computing power is provided.
So far, Anthropic and OpenAI have raised their capital through what are known as seed funding rounds. In this context, companies or funds invest in startups at a very early stage, believing in their success. Harrison Rolfes, an analyst at PitchBook, estimates that OpenAI has already raised $185.9 billion since its founding; Anthropic is a close second, with $126.8 billion.
Who will win the race?
For most financial experts, it is clear that Anthropic has a better chance of success on the stock exchange. Analyst Harrison Rolfes writes in response to a question from DW: "Anthropic has the strongest reasons to go public, and it is especially the numbers that are convincing. "With projected revenue of $47 billion this year, the company will earn significantly more than OpenAI, which is at $30 billion. And this despite having raised less capital in total."
Fokus shumë i madh te paratë, shumë i vogël te përgjegjësia.
Therefore, experts believe that Amodei's stance is, at least in part, a marketing strategy. Pedro Domingos, a machine learning expert and author of the book "The Great Algorithm," is quite certain that the meteoric success and the pressure that will follow will severely damage Anthropic's self-image as the "good guys." "The company will have to make difficult decisions, and, ultimately, some Anthropic employees will leave the company out of anger at this perceived betrayal — just as Dario Amodei and others left OpenAI."
The fight for AGI?
According to Domingos, these companies are interested in developing Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). This is AI capable of performing any human cognitive task. "Whoever achieves this will have such a huge advantage that it cannot be achieved by anyone else." The concept is dubious, Domingos says, "but they believe in it."
“First to market doesn’t necessarily mean you win,” adds PitchBook’s Rolfes. To truly make money from AI, you need broad adoption, the trust of corporate customers, and a healthy margin structure. “Ultimately, what matters most is which AI gets used in the world’s biggest companies.” So the race for AI supremacy is far from over. /DW
