Violent incidents continue in Belfast/ 27 people flee their homes, police

For the second day in a row, Belfast and other areas of Northern Ireland have been gripped by violent unrest following the stabbing attack on 27-year-old Stephen Ogilvie.

As a result of the incidents, at least 27 people have been forced to flee their homes, while authorities are investigating the possible role of social media in inciting the violence.

The injured man's family has publicly condemned the riots, demanding that the event not be used to incite hatred and division.

In a statement released by the Northern Ireland Police Service, family members said they were shocked by the burning of homes, vehicles and attacks on police.

They also clarified Ogilvie's medical condition, saying he lost his left eye and suffered other serious injuries, but his condition remains stable. The family called on citizens to cooperate with police and stop spreading false information online.

Police have warned that they are investigating fake posts and photos circulating on social media, which they say are being used to spread fear and incite hatred.

Meanwhile, British authorities are examining the influence of social platforms and messages shared online in organizing the riots.

Hadi Aladdin, 30, has been arrested and remanded in custody for the stabbing attack, facing charges of attempted murder. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said authorities would take action against anyone who incites violence and division in society. /CNA
