Trump warns Iran will pay price if it delays reaching deal

US President Donald Trump said Iran's military has been "totally defeated", warning that Tehran "will pay the price" for taking too long to "negotiate a deal" with Washington.

The American leader's statements come at a time of escalating tensions between the two countries.

In a post on Truth Social on June 10, Trump described Iran's armed forces as "real quacks," claiming that most of the country's naval and air forces "no longer exist."

He also assessed that Iran "has only words and no deeds" and described the Islamic Republic as a "bullying of the Middle East."

The statements come after US forces carried out strikes on Iranian air defense systems, radars and observation sites on the evening of June 9. The strikes were carried out near the Strait of Hormuz and Washington said they were in response to the downing of a US military Apache helicopter.

Iran then launched missiles and drones at US-linked targets in Jordan and across the Persian Gulf, although US officials said most were intercepted.

Despite this latest exchange of attacks, Trump has reiterated that a negotiated deal can be reached.

However, in an interview with Fox News on June 10, Trump said he was close to authorizing further attacks on Iranian infrastructure, including power plants and bridges, if Tehran refused to sign a deal.

Reuters news agency reported that negotiators from Qatar traveled to Iran on June 10, after consultations with Washington, in an attempt to finalize a deal.

According to Fox News, Trump said Iran still has a chance to reach an agreement, but suggested that further military action remains an option if negotiations continue to fail to produce any results.

The exchange of attacks between the US and Iran marks one of the most serious escalations since Washington and Tehran agreed to a ceasefire in April, after the US and Israel launched joint attacks on Iran in late February./REL
