The five safest countries in the world for 2026

While the number of active conflicts in the world has reached its highest level since the end of World War II, a small group of states continues to maintain stability, security, and peace.

According to the Institute for Economics and Peace, global peace has deteriorated for the 12th consecutive year, but the countries at the top of the ranking remain largely unaffected by this trend.

The Global Peace Index 2026 ranked 163 countries based on 23 indicators, including the level of conflict, military spending, crime rates and perception of safety.

1. Iceland – The safest country in the world

Iceland holds the top spot for the 19th consecutive year. The country is noted for its very low level of violence, strong institutions, social equality and extensive use of renewable energy.

Residents associate peace with close-knit communities, untouched nature, and a culture of well-being. Over 120 geothermal pools across the country are considered an important part of daily life.

2. New Zealand

New Zealand was ranked second in the world and the safest country in the Asia-Pacific region. Its geographical isolation has protected it from many international tensions, while its laid-back culture and close-knit communities contribute to a sense of security.

Residents say violent crime is rare and nature remains close by, with mountains, beaches, and forests accessible from almost any city.

3. Switzerland

Switzerland rose to third place thanks to its low crime rate and its traditional policy of military neutrality.

Residents emphasize the high level of trust between people and the culture of compromise. Stories of lost wallets and bank cards being returned to their owners are considered common examples of honesty in the country.

4. Slovenia

For the first time, Slovenia has entered the top five safest countries in the world. Low military spending, public safety and a strong connection to nature are the main factors.

Residents spend a lot of time outdoors, hiking, cycling, and doing sports activities, while work-life balance is considered an important social value.

5. Ireland

Ireland ranks fifth thanks to its low level of violence and non-involvement in international conflicts.

The tradition of hospitality and political neutrality have helped create a peaceful and safe environment. Residents believe that the country's difficult history has made them more sensitive to injustices and more open to foreigners.
