On their way to the United Kingdom, 300 migrants are kidnapped and threatened

More than 300 migrants from Iraqi Kurdistan, who were trying to reach the UK last summer, were kidnapped in Libya by a local militia.

According to a BBC investigation, the hostages were tortured and their families were demanded a ransom of $5,000 per person. If payment was not made quickly, the kidnappers threatened to remove the hostages' kidneys.

Many of the migrants had paid thousands of dollars to be smuggled to Europe by smuggler Noah Aaron. According to witnesses, a financial dispute between him and Libyan militia led to the kidnapping of the migrants.

Former hostages told of inhumane conditions, with up to 178 people held in a small cell, without sunlight for months, with only one toilet and very little food. Some of them showed wounds and burns that, they said, were the result of torture.

Relatives presented photographs of the released individuals with surgical marks on their bodies. A British specialist said the scars looked similar to those from kidney removal operations, but there is still no conclusive evidence that the organs were forcibly removed.

At least one migrant has reportedly died in captivity, and it is not known exactly how many people are still being held hostage. Iraqi Kurdistan authorities say that despite the shocking stories of kidnappings, torture and deaths, many young people continue to head for Europe in search of a better life. /CNA
