Ukraine says missiles hit military facility deep inside Russia

Ukrainian forces have carried out a missile strike deep inside Russia, hitting a major military facility overnight, President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

He said FP-5 Flamingo missiles hit a drone and missile factory in the city of Cheboksary, in the Chuvash Republic, more than 900 km (560 miles) from the front line. Local officials said three people were injured in a missile attack on the city.

Ukraine also said it had struck the Moscow-occupied port of Mariupol on the Sea of ??Azov, a Russian oil refinery in Samara and a "shadow fleet" oil tanker in the Black Sea.

In recent months, the Ukrainian military has intensified drone attacks on key targets across Russia.

Kiev says energy sites are legitimate targets, as they allow Moscow to continue its war effort. However, missile strikes deep inside Russia have been rare.

The Russian military said its air defense units had intercepted or shot down 326 Ukrainian drones over a number of regions overnight.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian air force said it shot down 181 of the 207 drones shot down by Russia during that time. It also received 21 direct hits in 14 locations.

At least two people were killed and 26 others injured, including two children, in four Ukrainian regions over the past 24 hours, local officials said.

In a Telegram post on Wednesday, President Zelensky wrote: "Overnight, Ukrainian FP-5 Flamingos struck a military plant in Cheboksary that supplies the occupying army with components for drones and missiles."

He also released footage that reportedly shows a missile flying towards its target and smoke billowing from a structure.

The Ukrainian military later said that the VNIIR-Progress plant had been hit and that there had been a fire at the site.

The head of the Chuvash Republic, Oleg Nikolaev, confirmed that Cheboksary had been hit, reporting three injuries. He did not say whether the military plant was damaged.

The FP-5 Flamingo missile has a 1,150 kg (2,535 lbs) warhead and a range of 3,000 km, placing Russia's capital, Moscow, and other major cities within its range.

Along with its Western allies, Ukraine has also been actively developing other types of missiles in order to maximize the costs of invading Russia and force Moscow to seek a solution.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has so far rejected all proposals for negotiations.

Last week, Putin said he saw no point in meeting with Zelensky after the Ukrainian leader demanded face-to-face talks in an attempt to end the war.

The Kremlin leader also insisted that Russian troops were advancing everywhere on the broad front line - although evidence suggests the front has been virtually static in the past few months./CNA, translated by BBC
