Hundreds of migrants arrive in Crete

The Greek Coast Guard has intercepted or rescued nearly 550 migrants south of Crete in two days. They are believed to have set off from the Libyan coast. Many of them had paid large sums of money to smugglers.

Over a 48-hour period, in several operations by the Greek Coast Guard south of Crete and near the island of Gavdos, located along the coast, around 550 migrants have been stopped or rescued from a dangerous situation at sea. According to official sources, there are currently many boats traveling from Libya to Crete.

The largest operation took place on Tuesday south of Crete. A total of 192 people, including 42 minors, were rescued from a fishing boat and brought to shore. According to the rescuers, they had set off from the Libyan coast and had paid traffickers around US$3,000 each for the crossing.

The 300-kilometer route from Libya to Crete is increasingly being used by smuggling gangs. Greek Migration Minister Thanos Plevris stated just a few days ago that there are currently more than half a million people in Libya waiting for an opportunity to continue their journey to Europe.

Meanwhile, the Greek parliament ratified new EU rules on migration and asylum on Tuesday evening, according to the parliament's presidency in Athens. The law comes into force on June 12 and provides, among other things, for closed reception centers in third countries./ DW
