Iran strengthens protection of nuclear stockpiles, complicating negotiations

Iran has taken new measures to strengthen the protection of its enriched uranium stockpiles, by demolishing tunnels and blocking entrances with explosive mines, according to sources familiar with US intelligence.

According to reports, these actions make it much more difficult and dangerous to access about half a ton of highly enriched uranium, a material considered strategic in the ongoing negotiations between Iran and the United States.

The development comes as the Trump administration is trying to reach a deal with Tehran to control and remove nuclear materials. U.S. officials have said a draft agreement would see Iran hand over its enriched uranium, destroy it and then take it out of the country.

However, the details of the agreement remain unclear, as both sides have presented different versions of the negotiated terms. The publication of a purported draft of the agreement in Iranian media has also prompted a sharp reaction from President Trump.

Experts warn that the new fortifications could significantly complicate the process of verifying and removing uranium. According to them, any operation to extract the material would require heavy excavation equipment and specialized demining operations, increasing costs and risks.

The international community believes that most of the stockpile is located in collapsed tunnels near the Isfahan nuclear complex, while other quantities are stored in various locations within Iranian territory.

Security sources have revealed that the US military had previously considered the possibility of an operation to seize nuclear material, but the plan was deemed too risky to implement.

Meanwhile, American and Iranian negotiators are expected to continue technical talks even if a political agreement is reached, to determine how to deal with nuclear stockpiles and the future of the Iranian atomic program.

Experts estimate that the safe process of extracting and transporting the uranium could take weeks, even if the parties reach a final agreement in the coming days./ CNA
