Umbrellas have been banned on a beach in Sardinia for anyone between the ages of 10 and 65, in the latest flashpoint in Italy's long-running conflict over beaches.
The measure was among several imposed by local authorities on Punta Molentis beach in Villasimìus, on the southeast coast of Sardinia, as part of an initiative to protect its pristine environment.
In addition to paying 10 euros to set foot on the public beach, only families with children under 10 are allowed to set up only one umbrella, as are those over 65.
The move has not been well received by holidaymakers, generating a mix of disbelief and surprise online, as well as raising concerns about the risks of skin cancer or health concerns from the heat.
