The labor market has shown worrying trends in early 2026. The employment rate for the population aged 15 and over has dropped to 58%, marking a decrease of 0.5 percentage points compared to the last quarter and 0.3 percentage points compared to the previous year. This indicator shows that the economy has had difficulty in creating new jobs.
The hardest hit has been the industrial sector, where according to INSTAT employment has fallen by 4.1% year-on-year and by 5.7% within the quarter. While the services sector has recorded growth, this has not been sufficient to compensate for the losses in industry.
Another major challenge is the generation gap. While the 30-64 age group continues to be the main pillar of the market, young people aged 15-29 are facing greater difficulties in finding employment, widening the gap between education and market demands.
Official unemployment is reported at 8.4%, but statistical margins indicate that the real rate could range from 7.3% to 9.4%.
