Ditmir Bushati on Public Square: Hungary after Orban

Ditmir Bushati discusses on "Public Square" with Hungarian political scientist Zsuzsanna Szelenyi. The conversation focused on the political changes in Hungary after the defeat of Viktor Orban and the challenges for restoring democracy in the country.

The focus of the conversation was the analysis of Viktor Orbán's political model during his 16 years in power, which Szelenyi described as a process of "massive autocratization", accompanied by the concentration of power, the weakening of institutional control, and the growth of partisan corruption.

She emphasized that the economic crisis, social discontent, and the younger generation's departure from the illiberal model significantly contributed to political change in Hungary.

The interview also addressed the rise of Péter Magyar and the Tisza party, which won the elections on the promise of returning Hungary to the European course and confronting the corruption of the oligarchic system built up over the past years. According to Szelenyi, the main challenge for the new government remains the real democratization of institutions and the construction of new mechanisms of checks and balances.

A significant part of the discussion was devoted to Hungary's foreign policy, relations with the European Union and Ukraine, as well as the potential impact of Viktor Orban's fall on the Western Balkans.

Szelenyi assessed that the new government is expected to follow a more pragmatic and European approach, distancing itself from the politics of conflict and the network of personal alliances built by Orban in the region. /CNA
