Rare discoveries in the ancient city of Pompeii/ Archaeologists are surprised

Stunning works of art have been discovered in a new dig at Pompeii, the ancient Roman city buried in an eruption from Mount Vesuvius in AD 79.

Archaeologists say that the frescoes are among the most beautiful found in the ruins of the ancient site.

Mythical Greek figures such as Helen of Troy are painted on the high black walls of a large banquet hall. The nearly complete mosaic floor of the room includes more than a million individual white tiles.

A third of the lost city still needs to be cleared of volcanic debris. The current dig, the largest in a generation, is underscoring Pompeii's position as the world's premier window into the people and culture of the Roman empire.

Park director Gabriel Zuchtriegel presented the "black room" exclusively to the BBC on Thursday.

It is likely that the dark color of the walls was chosen to hide the smoke deposits from the lamps used during the entertainment after sunset.

The black room is the latest treasure to emerge from the dig, which began 12 months ago - an investigation that will feature in a BBC and Lion TV documentary series to be broadcast later in April./ CNA
