Spanish official dies after evacuating passengers with hantavirus in Tenerife

The operation in Tenerife to manage the evacuation of passengers from the MV Hondius ship has left one casualty among members of the security forces.

A 62-year-old Spanish security guard died while participating in coordinated efforts at the port of Granadilla de Abona, where passengers linked to the hantavirus outbreak discovered on a cruise ship disembarked over the weekend.

The death of the guard was reported by several media outlets citing official sources and professional associations of the Guardia Civil. The guard was assigned to the general headquarters of the Tenerife Command and was on duty within the operational command post set up to coordinate the evacuation.

At this time, there is no official information related to death from a hantavirus infection or a possible exposure to the virus. /CNA
