Xi Jinping: Strait of Hormuz must be opened, serves regional interests

Chinese President Xi Jinping has said that the Strait of Hormuz should be fully open to ships, as the US and Iran have yet to reach an agreement on movement in the Persian Gulf.

"The Strait of Hormuz should remain open for normal navigation, which serves the common interests of countries in the region and the broader international community," Xi said during a phone call with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The Chinese leader reiterated Beijing's call for a ceasefire to end hostilities and called for actions that lead to the restoration of peace. Last week, the Chinese leader announced a four-point proposal for peace in the Middle East.

The Chinese economy has been relatively insulated from global price shocks, thanks to its large oil and gas reserves, but it is starting to see higher energy costs weighing on the economy. China is the largest buyer of Iranian crude.

Meanwhile, the seizure of an Iranian-flagged cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman by the US on Sunday has cast doubt on a second round of ceasefire talks between Tehran and Washington. The waterway between Iran and Oman usually carries a fifth of global oil and gas supplies. /CNA
