Trump: Iran ceasefire makes congressional approval for war unnecessary

United States President Donald Trump has told the US Congress that hostilities with Iran have ended, arguing that the current ceasefire eliminates the need for parliamentary approval to continue military operations.

Under US law, a president must obtain Congressional authorization within 60 days of commencing military action, otherwise he is forced to cease hostilities.

However, Trump has stated that this deadline does not apply in the current case, as the ceasefire with Iran has "stopped" the legal process.

In a letter to congressional leaders, he stressed that there has been no military clash between the US and Iran since early April and that "hostilities that began on February 28, 2026 have ended."

Meanwhile, Iran and the US have yet to reach a long-term peace agreement, despite diplomatic efforts and new proposals exchanged through mediators.

The issue has sparked debate in Congress, with some lawmakers and legal experts opposing the Trump administration's interpretation, stressing that a ceasefire does not constitute a formal end to the conflict and does not suspend the constitutional obligation for approval.

The debate comes at a time of high international tensions, as the situation between Washington and Tehran remains volatile and without a final agreement on the horizon./ CNA
