Iran presents Pakistan with new proposal for talks with US

Iran has sent a new proposal for talks with the US to Pakistan, which has emerged as a key mediator between Tehran and Washington as the war continues.

Iranian state broadcaster IRIB reported that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held a series of phone calls with several of his counterparts today regarding new initiatives related to ending the war.

Araghchi spoke with the foreign ministers of Turkey, Egypt, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Azerbaijan. The Iranian minister also spoke with the EU's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, where they reportedly "discussed and exchanged views on recent regional and international developments."

The European Commission confirmed the conversation between Kallas and Araghchi, which it said discussed "ongoing diplomatic efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and long-term security agreements."

Meanwhile, Pakistan has yet to confirm the news of the proposal to end the war. It is also not yet clear what is included in the proposal or whether Trump will accept it.

The two countries have been locked in a standoff for nearly four weeks since reaching a temporary ceasefire, with the US blocking Iran's ports and the Strait of Hormuz remaining virtually closed to Tehran.

Although the talks appeared publicly at an impasse, Trump said yesterday that no one knows their status except him and a small group of others, suggesting they were still ongoing. /CNA
