Avoiding a vote in Congress/US Government: The war with Iran is over

The US government says the war with Iran is over, adding that the ceasefire ended the 60-day deadline that required congressional approval for the continuation of military operations.

Apparently to avoid a legally binding vote in Congress, the US government considers the war with Iran over.

The 1973 War Powers Resolution requires that a military operation must be completed within 60 days; otherwise, the US president needs Congressional approval. The 60-day deadline expired this Friday at 1:50 a.m.

However, according to a US government representative, the deadline has been interrupted by the ceasefire that has been in effect since the beginning of April.

"Since Tuesday, April 7, there has been no exchange of fire between US forces and Iran," the government representative said, US media reported.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also referred to the ceasefire during a Senate hearing when asked about the need for the vote. According to his statement, the government could continue at any time, as the 60-day deadline has been interrupted by the ceasefire.

Meanwhile, a senior representative of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard has threatened the US with long and painful attacks on American military bases and warships in the region, in the event of new American attacks, even if they were limited. /CNA
