The Taliban stop Afghan female students from leaving the country to study in

Taliban women are living a bitter reality.

The universities were closed for them and the only option left was to study abroad, but even that seems impossible.

The BBC has published the story of a girl from the Taliban whom it says it named Natkai for security reasons.

"After the Taliban closed universities for women, my only hope was to get a scholarship to help me study abroad," says 20-year-old Afghan student Natkai.

She was awarded a scholarship to study at the University of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by billionaire Emirati businessman Sheikh Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor.

Scholarships for Afghan women were announced in December 2022 after the Taliban banned women from university. A total of 100 Afghan women have been successful in receiving these scholarships.

On Wednesday July 23, Natkai said goodbye to her family and left for the airport. But her hopes were quickly dashed.

Taliban officials said the girls are not allowed to leave Afghanistan on student visas, she says, her voice breaking.

Natkai is one of at least 60 girls who were returned from the airport.

The first pictures from the BBC show young women wearing black hijabs or headscarves standing next to their luggage in a state of shock and devastation.

The Taliban have banned solo travel for women and allow them to go abroad only with their husbands or a related male companion, such as a brother, uncle or father.

This latest move by the Taliban has raised concerns among rights groups and diplomats.

The former United Nations youth representative from Afghanistan, Shkula Zadran, has posted a message asking the university not to give up on the girls.

The Taliban have not given any statement or clarification./ CNA
