Authorities in Florida: Attack in Jacksonville with racist motives

Three people were killed Saturday afternoon at a store in Jacksonville, Florida. Authorities consider the attack racially motivated. The perpetrator of the attack, a young white man in his 20s who later killed himself, had left notes on the computer for his family expressing his hatred of African-Americans.

Multiple police units were deployed in Jacksonville when a gunman opened fire inside a Dollar General store.

"Jacksonville has suffered the loss of three precious lives at the hands of an armed assailant," said Sheriff Waters.

Police say the suspect, a white male in his 20s, entered the store wearing combat gear, an assault rifle and a handgun. Three people were killed, before the perpetrator took his own life. Authorities said all three victims were African-American — two men and one woman.

The FBI says it is investigating.

"Hate crimes are and will always remain a top priority for the FBI because they are not simply an attack on the victim, but they are intended to threaten and intimidate an entire community," said FBI Agent Sherri Onks. .

The mayor immediately went to the scene of the attack.

"I am definitely hurt. We must do everything we can to discourage this kind of hate," said Mayor Donna Deegan.

According to investigators, the suspect texted his father Saturday afternoon, asking him to look at the materials on his computer. The family then called the Clay County Sheriff's Office after finding notes left by the attacker.

"Parts of the manifesto detail the disgusting ideology of hatred. "Simply put, this gun attack was racially motivated and he hated African Americans," said Sheriff Waters.

The city of Jacksonville is already mourning.

"People in this community are hurt and rightfully so. This makes no sense. I'm so angry already, and we have kids in this community who are going through this whole unnecessary situation," said City Council member Ju'coby Pittman./VOA
