The number of victims from explosions in Romania is increasing

The number of victims from explosions at a gas station on the outskirts of Bucharest has increased to two.

From the explosions on August 26, which caused a fire in Romania, 57 people were also injured.

Among the injured, most of whom have severe burns, are also 39 firefighters and four police officers, said the head of the emergency department, Raed Arafat.

Seven patients, who suffered severe burns, have been transferred to various European Union states for medical treatment, he added. A military plane has transported two patients to Milan, Italy.

The President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, wrote on Facebook that "I am deeply upset" after the explosions, which he described as a "tragedy".

Arafat said the gas station, which sold LPG for household appliances and some vehicles, had been operating without a license in Krevedia, a town about 20 kilometers northeast of Bucharest.

Florin Petre, the mayor of Krevedia, told PROTB that the gas station was closed in 2020.
The building where the station was located is owned by a company called SC Flagas, which is controlled by Ion Doldurea, the son of the mayor of Karakal, a town around 75 kilometers west of the Romanian capital.

The first explosion caused a massive fire, while the second explosion occurred while rescue teams were battling the flames.

It is reported that a third tanker filled with fuel is still at the scene. Although the flames were extinguished overnight, firefighters are still working on the scene. Over 3,000 people have been evacuated from the surrounding area.

It is still not clear what caused the first explosion and authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

The public has expressed anger over allegations of corruption and a lack of inspections of whether companies in this sector comply with safety rules.

In 2015, 64 people died in a fire in a nightclub in Bucharest that was caused by fireworks./REL
