Iran says it is open to nuclear talks with the US

Iran's security chief, Ali Larijani, said his country is open to nuclear talks with the United States, but ruled out any restrictions on Tehran's missile program.

"The path to negotiations with the US is not closed. But the Americans are the ones who only talk about talks but do not sit at the table and unfairly blame Iran for this," said Larijani, who is secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council.

"By raising unachievable issues like missile restrictions, they set a path that renders any talks null and void," Larijani said in a post on X.

These statements come days after the United States welcomed a decision by European powers to reinstate United Nations sanctions on Iran, but said it remains "ready for direct engagement with Iran."

Nuclear talks between Tehran and Washington, which began in April, broke down in mid-June when Israel attacked Iranian nuclear facilities. The US then carried out attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities.

Last week, Britain, France and Germany – known as the E3 group – activated the automatic imposition of UN sanctions – a mechanism foreseen in the nuclear agreement that Iran reached with world powers in 2015. This mechanism can be activated in the event of non-compliance with the provisions of the agreement.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Washington aims for a "durable solution to the Iranian nuclear issue" and that the activated mechanism does not contradict the US's readiness for "sincere diplomacy, on the contrary it strengthens it."

Following the Israeli and US attacks, Iran suspended cooperation with the UN nuclear agency and demanded guarantees against military action before resuming any negotiations.

Western governments are constantly concerned about Iran's missile program, describing it as a threat to regional security.

In July, France called for a "comprehensive agreement" with Tehran, covering not only its nuclear program, but also its missile program and regional ambitions.

Iran has insisted that its military capabilities will not be negotiated.

Western governments have said they suspect Iran is seeking to create nuclear weapons, but Tehran has consistently denied these claims .
