German Defense Minister criticizes Ursula von der Leyen

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius criticized Ursula von der Leyen's comments on sending troops to Ukraine, saying the EU has no competence for this.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius sharply criticized comments by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen regarding military security guarantees that Ukraine seeks against Russian attacks as part of a possible peace solution.

According to media reports and statements published by the British newspaper Financial Times, von der Leyen has stated that "precise plans" are being drawn up for sending a multinational force to Ukraine. Von der Leyen told the Financial Times that the plans are already quite detailed.

Pistorius said that in his opinion, publicly discussing such topics before Kiev and Moscow sit down at the negotiating table is "completely wrong."

The EU has no competence to send troops

"Apart from the fact that the European Union has no authority or competence regarding the positioning of troops - regardless of who or what - I would be cautious and reserved about confirming or commenting on such plans in any way," Pistorius said.

However, Pistorius hinted that there are ongoing discussions about "what might be possible, what might not and under what conditions and or with what reservations something might be conceivable". "But to discuss these things publicly at this moment, I think, is completely wrong," he said./ DW
