End of Orban's 16-year rule/ Peter Magyar sworn in as Hungary's prime

Conservative Peter Magyar was sworn in as Hungary's new prime minister on Saturday. Hungary's center-right Tisza party defeated Viktor Orban's right-wing populist Fidesz party in a landslide victory last month, ending his 16-year rule.

"The Hungarian people have given us the mandate to end decades of instability. They have given us the mandate to open a new chapter in the history of Hungary. Not just to change the government, but also to change the system. To start from scratch," Magyar said.

Hundreds of people gathered outside parliament to watch the swearing-in ceremony on big screens. Hungary's Tisza Party won 141 of the 199 seats in parliament in April's elections, giving it the two-thirds majority needed to change the constitution and push through reforms.

The 45-year-old has pledged to fight corruption and undo policies adopted under Orban's government to control the judiciary, media and other sectors.

He has also pledged to mend ties with the EU. Relations between the NATO member and the EU were strained while Orban was prime minister, moving closer to Moscow and opposing EU efforts to support Ukraine against Russian invasion.

Hungary inherits an economy that just emerged from stagnation in the first quarter and is now being pressured by rising energy costs related to the war in the Middle East.

One of his first tasks as prime minister will be to try to unblock billions of euros in frozen EU funds to help the economy recover. The funds were frozen during Orban's time in office due to concerns about the rule of law and corruption in Hungary. Also on Saturday, the EU flag was raised on the parliament building in Budapest for the first time since Orban removed it in 2014. /CNA
