"They were trying to bypass the blockade"/ US military attacks two Iranian tankers

The US military has fired on two Iranian-flagged tankers that were trying to bypass an ongoing US blockade, disabling them as they attempted to enter an Iranian port in the Gulf of Oman, the US Central Command said on Friday.

"A U.S. Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet from the USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) disabled both tankers after firing precision munitions into their smokestacks, preventing the non-compliant vessels from entering Iran," the military statement said.

The deactivation of the two tankers comes after the US carried out strikes on several Iranian targets on Thursday, in what Central Command called a response to Iran's attacks on US warships in the Strait of Hormuz.

Despite the attacks, US officials have maintained that the ceasefire between the US and Iran is still in effect. /CNA
