WHO: Hantaviruses are not like COVID-19, risk to the population remains low

The World Health Organization has stated that the outbreak of suspected hantavirus cases should not be compared to a pandemic like COVID-19, emphasizing that the virus spreads in completely different ways and usually through prolonged contact.

According to the latest data, five of the eight suspected cases have been confirmed, all in people who were on board a ship.

Health authorities do not rule out the possibility of other cases emerging, as the incubation period of the disease can last up to six weeks.

The WHO emphasizes that the risk to public health remains low, including in the Canary Islands, where the ship is currently being directed.

Investigations into the explosion are still ongoing.

According to authorities, the first infected people visited areas where a species of rat known to carry the virus is present, which is suspected to be the initial source of the infection./ CNA
