The community of Grindavik has experienced the relentless forces of nature in recent weeks and months, proving once again why Iceland is often called the "Land of Fire and Ice".
Three houses in this town on the Reykjanes peninsula in southwest Iceland were destroyed this month when lava erupted through two fissures created by the Svartsengi volcanic system.
Once a thriving fishing spot with vibrant sports teams and a youthful population, Grindavik is now empty. People have fled and are beginning to face the realization that they can no longer live there.
The tragedy occurred on January 10, when a man working in the city fell into one of the cracks. After a brief inspection, the operation was called off due to the risks.
Four days later, another eruption began dangerously close to Grindavik.
