19 killed in bomb attack in Colombia/ Suspected perpetrator, a drug lord

A highway bomb attack in southwestern Colombia has killed 19 people and injured at least 38 others, including five children. The explosion occurred on the Pan-American Highway in the municipality of Cajibio in the Cauca province.

Governor Octavio Guzman described the incident as a tragedy and warned of a terrorist escalation, while in a post on "X" he shared footage from the scene, where a large number of damaged vehicles were seen.

President Gustavo Petro blamed the attack on Ivan Mordisco, one of Colombia's most wanted criminals, whom the leftist leader has compared to the late drug lord Pablo Escobar. Petro described those responsible for the deadly incident as "terrorists, fascists and drug traffickers."

Mordisco is a dissident of the now-defunct Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) who operate in the region. He chose not to participate in the peace agreement that the FARC signed with the state in 2016.

The bomb attack is the latest in a series of explosions targeting public infrastructure. At least 26 incidents have occurred over the past two days in the departments of Valle del Cauca and Cauca, and have only affected civilians, according to the Commander of the Colombian Armed Forces, Hugo López.

The wave of attacks comes ahead of presidential elections scheduled for May 31, with security being one of the central issues of the election campaign. /CNA
