The First Lady of France, Brigitte Macron, has given a rare interview to the French media, where she took stock of her years at the Elysee Palace, since her husband, Emmanuel Macron, came to power in May 2017.

The 73-year-old, former French language teacher, has revealed that she keeps a personal diary to cope with difficult moments, which she has not shown to anyone.

"Sometimes I find it hard to see the blue sky. Before, I had a normal life, with children and work, like everyone else. Here at the Elysee, the years have passed very quickly. They have been extremely intense. I have seen the darkness of the world, the stupidity and the evil. Sometimes I feel sadder than ever before ," she said.

Her confession comes at a time when she and her family have faced ongoing online attacks. In January, several people were sentenced to up to eight months in prison on probation for defamation and spreading rumors about her identity and age difference with the president.

During the trial, her daughter, Tiphaine Auziere, publicly denounced the attacks, describing them as a "systematic questioning of her mother's identity and integrity."

She also raised concern about the worsening health condition of Brigitte Macron, as a result of a disinformation campaign that has spread on a global scale.

"This never-ending whirlwind is increasingly affecting her life and health," she said.

Meanwhile, the presidential couple has decided to pursue the legal route to combat defamation and conspiracy theories, both in France and the US. /CNA
