He was disqualified from the race for the leadership of the Democratic Party/

Mereme Sela has reacted after reacting after being disqualified from the race for the position of leader of the Democratic Party. In a reaction to the media, she stated that she will address the Tirana Court to suspend the electoral process in the DP.

She also said that she received the notice of disqualification through the media, adding that the decision is unfair and unjustified. According to her, the current leader Sali Berisha should have been disqualified from the competition as well.  

Full reaction:

I, Mereme Sela, candidate for president of the Democratic Party of Albania, hereby inform the public that the presidential elections and the relevant procedures are being manipulated. For these reasons, I have decided:

1. To address the Tirana Court with a request to suspend the electoral process, as illegal, unfair, unequal and in violation of the DP statute, approved by the Assembly and recognized by the court.
2. To address SPAK to investigate the corrupt electoral process in the Democratic Party by the defendant Sali Berisha who is also charged with other criminal offenses.
3. To address the US Embassy, ??the British Embassy and the EU mission to inform them and ask for their assistance, as former president Sali Berisha has taken the party hostage and is not allowing free and fair elections to be held.
4. To address the media to help us ensure that the Democratic Party is not destroyed, but democratized. Our elimination, as five rivals in the race – Evi Kokalari, Alesia Balliu, Ervin Salianji and Vladimir Mula – constitutes an attack on democracy within the party.
5. The only person who does not meet the criteria of the statute is former chairman Sali Berisha, who lost the 2025 elections and is not legally allowed under the party statute to run for the position of chairman.
The Democratic Party cannot come to power with a leader “non grata” in Washington and London.

I received the notice of disqualification through the media, which in itself is unacceptable. This decision is unfair and unjustified. On the contrary, if there was a fair assessment and in accordance with the party statute, the person who should have been subject to disqualification would be Mr. Berisha.

For this reason, I will follow all available legal procedures and file my official complaint. However, based on previous experiences, I do not expect a serious reaction or response from the Democratic Party, as this has been a repeated practice over the years.

This course of action is one of the main reasons why the Democratic Party is in this situation today. /CNA
